Bodega altos

The village of Elvillar de Alava was chosen to create a unique wine growing and making concept in the heart of Rioja Alavesa but "in the high ground". All the grapes grown and made into wine at ALTOS come from the villages of Elvillar, Kripan and the northern part of Laguardia and the vineyards are between 580 and 780 meters high. Three families with impeccable Spanish wine growing and making credentials came together to create wines in one of the best Terroirs of all – Rioja Alavesa.
With it's 60 hectares of high ground terraces nestled against the Sierra Cantabria, facing south, and magnificent clay-gravel soils, the Estate & winery enjoys a specific Terroir that expresses uniquely the complexity possible in Rioja Alavesa.
The attention given to vinification and respect for nature allows the preservation and purity of the fruit, complemented by integrated and just enough, well-balanced French oak ageing. A touch of class, with a style showing great finesse and elegance, Altos de Rioja wines develop a great potential for ageing based on the harmony of the blend and the natural might of the appellation.
Together with a modern, fresh and contemporary packaging, the Altos de Rioja wines are mainly distributed in the on trade channel and some direct-to-consumer premium platforms.

Back in the mid 1900's, the San Ildefonso family was working in collaboration with different important Rioja Alavesa producers. These were bigger wineries that according to the family, could not express in their wines the authenticity and uniqueness of the sub region's unique Terroir.
Therefore, the San Ildenfonso family moved to Toro in central Spain to pioneer there the later booming appellation, producing full and characterful wines but with a finesse that to this day stands out in the region.

After some years, the family felt they had recapture their Rioja Alavesa origin in parallel to excelling in Toro and this is how a new passion, full of challenges, started – ALTOS de Rioja. The San Ildefonso's found in ARAEX the perfect partner for this thrilling journey and the ideal winemaking allies: the Muñoz family from La Mancha and Jean-Marc Sauboa, the renowned flying winemaker.

a relative newcomer to Rioja, this boutique winery in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa is passionately led by a group of experienced professionals with impeccable credentials in the world of Spanish wine. Joint owners and longstanding winemakers Roberto San Ildefonso and Bienvenido Muñoz together with flying winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua are creating a range of uniquely modern Rioja wines.
